“Bruce Kurnow breathes new life into traditional holiday hymns, carols, and tunes. In doing so he takes us to a place that includes classics from the Highlands, blues from the Lowlands, and a broad base of ethnic voices and rhythms. Clearly Bruce proves that he can travel many roads.” - Robert Stead, The Classical Free-Reed
BRUCE KURNOW
Bruce Kurnow is a native of Minneapolis, Minnesota who has enjoyed a long career in the music industry. At the age of 3 he bagan playing the piano, and was immediately hooked. As a teenager he discovered a special connection with the harmonica and has remained dedicated to exploring the instruments possibilities. He also plays stringed harp, piano, guzheng (Chinese harp) as well as having studied voice, theory, and composition. All this has proven to be a solid foundation for his subsequent work that includes 27 recordings of original compositions, as well as works on 11 non-original pieces. His recording “Harmonicaland” was nominated for Best Solo Instrument Album of 2004 by Just Plain Folks. His thoughtful stringed harp and piano playing evokes many warm feelings, and soothes the soul with each song. Give Bruce a listen, and we think you’ll agree!
Bruce Kurnow has been recognized with four Minnesota Music Awards for his harmonica, stringed harp, and keyboard work. Since 1971 he has been an active studio musician, playing on hundreds of commercials, albums, and film scores. As a performer he has played with harmonica master Mojo Buford who dubbed Bruce “The Creeper”. He has toured extensively with Mason Proffit, and has worked with greats such as Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker. He co-founded the group Passage with guitarist Bobby Schnitzer. This project was followed up by membership in the Doug Maynard Band which included the original lead singer from Passage. In a recent Minneapolis Star and Tribune poll, both of these bands were honored as two of the seven greatest live Minnesota rock groups of the 70’s. Passage was recently inducted into the Minnesota Rock & Country Hall of Fame. Since leaving the Doug Maynard Band in the 80’s Bruce has pursued his solo career, performing as a singer/songwriter and also showcasing his unique simultaneous combination of stringed harp and harmonica. His diversity can be heard on any of the albums by Bruce Kurnow that we offer for you here!
