Twelve Shades of Night was recorded at Granada Studios in El Granada, CA. The studio is known for tracking a wide variety of music while specializing in acoustic instrument recording techniques that Granada Studios' engineers have developed through the years.
During 2009-2010, Stevan wrote 12 songs inspired by the 12 hours of night. A couple of these songs were remakes (My Wild Gypsy, Prayer, Malaguena) from previous albums. During the summer months, Stevan worked late nights crafting the pieces to form the new album and the new sound. With help from his friend, string arranger Sascha Jacobsen and the Musical Arts Quintet, the sound for the recording took shape. Sascha's distinct string arrangements played a very important part for the sound of this album. There were several other exceptional musicians that participated in the tracking: drummer Colin Douglas and palmas/cajon player Felix de Lola. Pleased with the tracking, Stevan mixed the songs over the course of a couple of weeks in the Fall. The album was mastered by Rainer Gembalczyk of Sienna Digital in Menlo Park.
