In fact, we use automation for certain services as well. What Is a Complete Broadcasting Package?
Early on we realized that the only way to provide a complete broadcast package for our label partners was to dedicate a lot of time, effort and resources to the service. Because many of the top broadcasters such as Pandora, and SiriusXM—and even in-store media broadcasters such as Mood Media, Stingray, Music Choice and Play Network—do not accept automated submissions, we needed to dedicate an ongoing team of workers to prepare each product for manual submission. That’s right! The only way to get it done right was by real people—one album, one song and one artist at a time. Our process does not utilize bulk uploads with one-click transmissions. In fact, the most successful broadcasters still use “old-school” methods and demand that all music be delivered by traditional methods. It’s true: Pandora and SiriusXM still require CD submissions to get your music approved and available for broadcast. And in those cases our ingestion team actually burns CDs on your behalf and mails them to such providers—all at no extra charge. That’s right!
In addition, we provide accurate registration and copyright of your Sound Recordings. Since you may be the copyright holder of Sound Recordings, we will copyright your music and oversee proper registrations with Performance Rights Organizations (e.g. Sound Exchange and 30 other international affiliates), which are essential for collecting digital broadcast royalties. These registrations and copyrights should not be confused with the underlying musical works (songs) on your tracks, however. QWhat is streaming radio airplay?
A:There are two primary ways to deliver audio these days: downloads and streaming. In downloads, an audio file is stored on the user’s computer. Streaming audio is not stored, only played. In the early days of streaming media—the mid-to-late 1990s—listening to music online wasn’t always fun. It was a little like driving in stop-and-go traffic during a heavy rain. Streaming audio (and video) has come a long way since then. The success of streaming media is fairly recent, but the idea behind it has been around as long as people have. When someone talks to you, information travels toward you in the form of a sound wave. Your ears and brain decode this information, allowing you to understand it. This is also what happens when you watch TV or listen to the radio. Information travels to an electronic device in the form of a cable signal, a satellite signal or radio waves. Your device decodes and plays the signal.
QDo I really need radio airplay or radio music promotion? Don’t radio broadcasts erode my download revenue?
A:Yes and no! Yes, you need radio play for numerous reasons. No, it is industry consensus that streaming does NOT erode download revenue. This is so because people listen to streaming digital radio because they are in a “listening mode,” not necessarily a “purchasing mode”. At that moment, a person is not visiting a download store and trying to buy downloads; instead that person is engaged with a radio station and simply trying to listen to music. Thus, if content owners (i.e. music labels and artists) do not offer their music to digital radio stations, they are missing out on two vital benefits. First, they are missing out on exposure, radio music promotion, viral marketing, brand building, artist awareness, etc. Second, many digital radio stations provide a “Buy” button that listeners can click to purchase the corresponding track to which they are listening; thus content owners are also missing out on potential downloads that were originated by the radio stream. In conclusion, it is a widely accepted fact that streaming encourages more downloads.
QAre you actually saying that the fractions of pennies I’ll earn from each digital radio stream are worth it?
A:Yes, absolutely. Think of it this way: First, streaming radio is trending worldwide at a high rate of consumption and is affordable for almost everyone. It will be available in most countries, for most people and at a cost-effective consumer rate—and it’s becoming widely available in cars! Think about that for a moment. Second, if your music is not available on digital radio stations, then you are simply missing out on ancillary revenue, as well as incremental free radio music promotions. Third, and most important, when someone downloads your music, it is typically a one-time purchase, which is fine … sort of. In contrast with digital radio, someone can listen to that same recording hundreds or maybe thousands of times along the way. The incremental revenue earned from multiple streams can outdistance downloads in many cases.

QHow long will it take to get radio airplay and get my music accepted on these stations?
A:Typically we will have your music prepped and delivered within 30 days, depending on the size and condition of your archive. In some instances, we’ve had music up and broadcasted within a week or even a few days. Other stations such as Pandora and SiriusXM are different (they are not automated), and thus our delivery protocol is manual. Also, Pandora and SiriusXM reserve the rights to accept or reject all submissions—yes, they are picky! That said, we have a good success rate with our manually delivered submissions.
QTell me how to get music copyrighted, how to copyright songs, and how to copyright music online.
A:First, let’s start with some important info regarding US copyright. Copyright law defines much of the music business, influencing the practices of recording, touring and distribution deals. Congress understands the importance of the music business, passing and amending copyright laws for decades to help manage the music industry. Still, many artists have very little information regarding copyright and rely on knowledge about laws that have changed dramatically through the years. Keep in mind that “song” copyright is distinct from the “sound recording” copyright. As a rule, the sound recording can be thought of as the “master” (the recorded performance of the song). That said, registration is not required for a valid copyright. That’s right! You actually do not need to register your copyright with the United States Copyright Office in order to have a valid copyright. You have a valid copyright as soon as your song or sound recording is “fixed in a tangible medium of expression”. This is a term used by the Copyright Act and means that your song or sound recording must be recorded (e.g. released on CD, digital stores, YouTube, etc.). While not mandatory, physical copyright registration of published music or recordings still has some benefits such as filing a lawsuit to enforce the copyright or receiving statutory damages. Getting your music copyrighted (masters and songs) by simply recording and distributing them is important, yet accurately registering them with “master” Performance Rights Organizations and “song” Performance Rights Organizations are imperative! QHow often will I receive these royalties?
A:All your streaming royalties will be included in your statement along with your download sales and other revenues generated. We send statements and royalty payments out to you on a quarterly basis. We’ll send your statements via email, and your royalty checks can be by mail or direct deposit—you choose.
